DIY SEO #2: The Target Audience of Schools
As you and your school staff decide who it’s target audience is, consider these things:
From what cities can you realistically expect to get students?
Are there large neighborhoods or areas of town which people may reference when looking for your school? For example, my wife’s school (she’s a 3rd grade teacher) is in the city of Tampa, FL, but it is also located in the area of town known as “New Tampa” and people do search for things in New Tampa. There are also several large subdivisions around the church which people reference in schools. So, in addition to Tampa, we target New Tampa and some of the subdivision names.
Is there a particular economic strata which people need to be in? Some schools are either cheap enough or have special programs which make them accessible to lower income families, but for most private schools, the tuition is too high for lower income families. On the other hand, some private schools charge more than most in order to offer more opportunities to the kids. Which financial situation fits your school?
Does your school specialize in anything, be it sports, arts, science, Christian education, etc.?
Does your school belong to a particular denomination and do you want to target families from that denomination? My wife’s school is technically part of a denomination, however, early on they decided they didn’t want to emphasize the denominational aspect of the school. So, they target all Christians in general. Even the school name uses “Christian” instead of the denomination.
