Keyword competition research is going to be much more important if you are planning to optimize for the ministries in your church as opposed to just church specific keywords (e.g. “churches in Crescent City, CA”).  If you are optimizing for only church specific keywords, you probably don’t have that many keywords on your list which get searched a significant number of times in a month in the first place and they probably aren’t that competitive anyway.

So, if you are only optimizing for church specific keywords you can possibly skip this step, especially if you are in a small town.  If you do decide to do this step, however, it probably isn’t worth your money to pay to use SEOmoz’s tool.  Just go with the PageRank method.
