DIY SEO #2: The Target Audience of Churches

Target Audience of Your ChurchAs you and your church team decide who it’s target audience is, consider these things:

From what cities can you realistically expect to get church visitors?

Are there large neighborhoods or areas of town which people may reference when looking for your church?  For example, my church is in the city of Tampa, FL, but it is also located in the area of town known as “New Tampa” and people do search for things in New Tampa.  There are also several large subdivisions around the church which people reference in churches.  So, in addition to Tampa, we target New Tampa and some of the subdivision names.

In a way, deciding on a target audience can be a particularly difficult task for churches.  Most of us like to think our church is for all people, all walks of life, anyone and everyone.  But the truth is that most churches have certain focuses or strengths.  My church, for example, has a distinct focus on family.  This has lead us to start a child development center, day care, and school along with various family ministries within the church itself.  It’s not to say that if you are single with no kids that you aren’t welcome.  By no means.  But we have more ministries designed for families than other demographics. Take a few minutes to really think about the ministry focus(es) of your church and create a profile of the types of people that would most likely be attracted to your church.
